Creative Arts Conference Includes Gospel and CeCe Winans Concert
A free concert by CeCe Winans kicked off the GCEP conference.
NSU’s Fischler School of Education and Human Services, in partnership with the Gospel Complex for Education & Preservation (GCEP), recently hosted a free conference, “Embracing the Future Through the Creative Arts.”
The conference focused on youth development, education, and artist development. Held in partnership with the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, the conference united educators, artists, music and film executives, and actors/actresses from across the country for three days of seminars, workshops, panel discussions and television tapings.
The GCEP conference began on Saturday, May 2, with singer CeCe Winans’ debut of her national tour of the “Always Sisters/Forever Brothers” teen conference. The one-day free event was open to students in grades 9-12. Following the full day of educational and self-empowerment sessions, Winans, Smokie Norful, A-7 and other guest artists gave a concert that evening at NSU’s Don Taft University Center.
The teen and main conferences were both free, and included tracks such as “Artist Development,” “Culture & the Creative Arts,” “Finding your Roots through the Soul – Historical perspectives of Gospel Music,” “Creativity in Urban Education,” and the “Business of the Industry.”
During the conference, Dr. Bobby Jones of BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel and a visiting professor at NSU also taped segments of his new artist showcase Bobby Jones Presents, which will be aired on The Word Network.
