CPS Faculty and Post Doctoral Resident Provide Assistance to High School in Crisis

Tragedy struck Episcopal High School in Jacksonville, FL. recently when an instructor whose services had been terminated earlier in the morning, shot and killed the high school’s headmaster, Dale Regan. The teacher then turned the gun on himself. Regan had worked at the school for 34 years.

Center for Psychological Studies Professor Scott Poland, Ed.D., co-director of the Suicide and Violence Prevention Office, who has an extensive background in school crisis response, served as a consultant at the high school in the aftermath of the shooting.

Poland was recently accompanied to the school by CPS alumnus Genevieve LaFleur, Psy.D., a post doctoral resident at NSU in the Crisis/ School Psychology Assessment and Consultation Center. A part of their strategy involved allowing staff to process their reactions. They also conducted a session to educate staff on typical reactions that students might have and how to best support students in light of the tragedy. Additionally, they conducted a planning session with the key administrators for the school in order to to address both short and long term needs for staff and students.
