College of Pharmacy Students Win APA – Academy of Student Pharmacists Local Patient Counseling Competition

The National Patient Counseling Competition, sponsored by CVS/Caremark in conjunction with the United States Public Health Service, began in 1984 with the goal to encourage student pharmacists in their efforts toward becoming better patient educators. The competition is designed to reflect changes that are occurring in practice, to promote and encourage further professional development of the student pharmacist and to reinforce the role of the pharmacist as a health care provider and educator.  The American Pharmacist Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) organization held a Local Patient Counseling Competition at each of our three campuses in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Ponce.  Our top finalist from each campus traveled to Washington, D.C. and competed in the National Patient Counseling Competition held during the APhA Annual Meeting during March 11 to 15, in Washington, D.C.

Although Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy students did not place in the National Top 10, all three students performed extremely well and represented NSU with great pride.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the competition and a very special congratulations to our Local Patient Counseling Competition.

Winners:  Munzareen Mirza, second-year pharmacy student from main campus; Clayton Yu, third-year pharmacy student from the West Palm Beach Student Educational Center (SEC); and  Sergio Baerga, a third-year pharmacy student from COP’s Ponce, Puerto Rico program.
