CAHSS Faculty and Students Raise Money for Ariel School in Bangladesh

Bake Sale for Ariel School April 2018

On Tuesday, April 10, 2018, the students in Honors Global Issues course (INST 1500H) held a bake sale in the UC spine to raise money for Ariel School in Bangladesh. G. Nelson Bass, III, J.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of History and Political Science in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS), taught the course.

The fundraiser was just one of several projects undertaken by the class. Former NSU adjunct professor Rezwan Hussain, Ph.D., who now teaches at the University of the Liberal Arts, Bangladesh, set up Ariel School, a free preschool for girls from the slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The school has three goals in working with at-risk girls from the poorest areas of Dhaka. To create a sanctuary, a space where, for a couple of hours a day, the girls are removed from the stress and chaos of daily life in the slums. Second, to impart some basic knowledge – the alphabet, counting, writing their own name – that will give the girls (and their parents) the confidence to enroll in primary school. Finally, the school seeks to instill some simple habits like hand washing to prevent illness. Hussain set up the school in response to working in the slums and noticing the extreme number of young girls who were not attending school. For the past two years, he has funded the school.

Throughout the semester, these Honors students worked to raise money and awareness for Ariel. By the end of the semester, the students raised enough money for Hussain to buy an electric motor for the rickshaw that carries the girls to school each morning. This motor will allow the students to travel to school across a bridge in about 1/3 of the time it currently takes for them to walk and cross a river by ferry.
