CAHSS Faculty and Students Present at the 4th International Forum on Marriage and Family Therapy in China
Pei-Fen Li, Ph.D., faculty in the Department of Family Therapy (DFT) in NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) and doctoral students Joshua Hernandez and Dorcas Matowe presented at the 4th International Forum on Marriage and Family Therapy held at Hangzhou Normal University, Hangzhou, China.
Li presented a quasi-experimental design study entitled, “Brief Therapy: Solution Talk with Parents of children with Autism in Taiwan.” It was conducted to evaluate if Solution Focused Brief Group Therapy (SFBGT) significantly enhances a wide range of coping strategies and decreases parenting stress for parents of children with Autism in Taiwan. She also highlighted the SFBT guidelines for developing a group treatment manual and discussed challenges and accommodations for working with this unique clinical population in the Chinese culture. Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation granted this project for International Scholarly Exchange in Taiwan.
Joshua Hernandez presented a case study entitled, “‘Coming Out’ of the Closet: Utilizing Solution-Focused Brief Therapy within the LGBT Population”. He proposed SFBT treatment process in working with the LBGT population and their families in addressing their “coming out” experiences.
Dorcas Matowe presented a case study entitled, “Examining the Application of three major Family Therapy Models with Chinese Families”. She presented the main concepts and explored the benefits and drawbacks of practicing three family therapy models with Chinese families, such as Bowen Family Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Narrative Family Therapy.
In addition to the conference, the group visited several famous and historic spots such as Shanghai’s Promenade: The Bund, Yu Garden, the City God Temple, the Jade Buddha Temple, and Zhujiajiao water valley in Shanghai and West Lake in Hanghou.
