CAHSS Epidemiologist Receives Florida Alcohol & Drug Abuse Association Lifetime Achievement Award
James Hall receives FADAA Award
NSU’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) is delighted to announce that James Hall has been awarded the Florida Alcohol & Drug Abuse Association Lifetime Achievement Award (FADAA). Hall is an epidemiologist with NSU’s Center for Applied Research on Substance Abuse (ARSH) in the Department of Justice and Human Services in CAHSS.
Hall has an extensive background here in South Florida. He served as the executive director of Up Front Drug Information and Education Center in Miami from 1982-2012, and was the recipient of the 2010 Path of Public Health Award for Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Services from Florida International University.
Hall was the first to report on the abuse of Rohypnol in 1992 and its use in multiple sexual assaults as the “date-rape drug.” He is credited with helping to ban Rohypnol from the United States. By the early 21st century, Hall was the lead in the tracking of prescription drug abuse and Florida’s “pill mills.” His partnership with the United Way of Broward County’s Commission on Substance Abuse resulted in the establishment of Florida’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. He is a frequent source for media information about Flakka and the opioid epidemic.
