Business Professors Present at Southwest Academy of Management Annual Conference

Two professors from NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship – Cynthia P. Ruppel, Ph.D., associate professor of information technology and Randi L. Sims, Ph.D., professor of management – teamed up with Peter Zeidler, director of advanced business analytics at TeleTech and adjunct professor, to present their research at the Southwest Academy of Management Annual Conference. The conference was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico from March 12 to 16, 2013. The paper received a certificate for Best Paper Nominee.

The group’s co-authored research was titled, “Emotional Labor and Its Outcomes:  A Study of a Philippines Call Center.” Their study considered whether Western human resource theories are applicable in the Philippines in the call center industry. This industry is a rapidly growing industry in the Philippines and the stress caused by the emotional labor work in a call center will have lasting impact on both the growth of the industry and the general health of a significant number of the citizens given the growing importance of the industry. Generally, they found that emotional stress was impacting job satisfaction, organizational commitment and ultimately an employee’s intention to quit.
