NSU students attend 2015 STEM Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Divya Pandya, a biology major at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, was awarded second place for her poster presentation at the third annual Life Sciences South Florida (LSSF) 2015 STEM Undergraduate Research Symposium.

The symposium took place on April 4, 2015, at William and Helen Thomas STEM Center at Indian River State College Pruitt Campus in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Pandya, a member of the college’s Undergraduate Honors Program and a participant in the Dual Admission Program at the College of Osteopathic Medicine, is the first NSU student to win an award at the conference.

Pandya’s research, titled “Modeling the Chemotactic Response of Caenorhabditis Elegans to a Dynamic Engineered Bacteria,” was co-authored by Christopher Blanar, Ph.D., and Robert P. Smith, Ph.D., assistant professors at the college, and Evan Haskell, Ph.D., professor at the college.

The symposium showcases the scientific work of South Florida’s science, technology, engineering, and math undergraduate students through student posters and oral presentations. Student participants gain valuable experience, presentation skills, and recognition by their peers, college and university faculty, and life science industries.

“It was a great opportunity for me to present and share my research experience as well as learn about the research experiences of students and faculty from universities all over Florida,” Pandya said.

Other NSU students who presented at the 2015 STEM symposium included Haley McKissack, Olena Bracho, Samuel Thomas, Daniel Garcia, Melissa Dauzonne, Yana Prilutskaya, Mariana Ferraz, Puja Patel, Sujay Kamisetty, Uzair Mohammed, and Ezana Assefa.
