You Can Count on Two Math Talks in Two Days
Join the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences for two Mathematics Colloquium Series talks in as many days. One talk will discuss using math for communication encryption, while another will provide an introduction to geometric flows in Euclidean spaces.

“How Mathematics Can Facilitate Secure Communication—Cryptographic Key Exchange”

About the Talk
One of the fundamental tasks of cryptography is to enable confidential communication across a public communication network. To this aim, efficient encryption schemes have been identified, offering strong security guarantees once the communication partners have a common secret key available. Establishing such a secret key among two or more parties in the absence of a secure communication infrastructure is not straightforward, however. Thus, cryptographic key exchange offers solutions for this task.
This talk discusses cryptographic requirements of key exchange protocols with two or more participants, and shows how suitable mathematical tools—in particular, elliptic curves—can be used to derive practical solutions with good scalability.

“On Deformations That Improve the Shape of a Surface”

About the Talk
This talk provides an introduction to geometric flows in Euclidean spaces, which improve the shape of a closed-surface modulo scaling. Miao will explain how these flows can be used to establish various isoperimetric-type inequalities by identifying certain monotone quantities along these flows.

Hosted by the college’s Division of Math, Science, and Technology, the Mathematics Colloquium Series aims to increase awareness of mathematics’ importance and applications in daily life. The series also gives mathematics faculty members and students the opportunity to discuss independent research and share their passion for the subject.
