Upcoming Mathematics Colloquium Is All About Arithmagons, Apr. 11
Even if you’ve never heard of arithmagons, you’ll know how to solve them by the end of the next Mathematics Colloquium Series talk. All are welcome to attend this event, hosted by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences.
“Arithmagons”
Mathematics Colloquium Series | Jose Franco, Ph.D. (University of North Florida)
Friday, Apr. 11
Noon–1:00 p.m.
Carl DeSantis Building | Room 5026
About the Talk
Arithmagons are polygonal graphs whose vertices and edges are numbered by natural numbers in such a way that the product of the labels of two adjacent vertices equals the label on the edge that connects them. During the talk, Franco will briefly explore the conditions for solvability. The remainder of the talk will focus on counting the number of arithmagons that can be constructed so that the multiplication of all the values on the edges equals a fixed natural number.
About the Series
Hosted by the college’s Division of Math, Science, and Technology, the Mathematics Colloquium Series aims to increase awareness of mathematics’ importance and applications in daily life. The series also gives mathematics faculty members and students the opportunity to discuss independent research and share their passion for the subject. For more information, contact Vehbi Paksoy, Ph.D., or Iuliana Stanculescu, Ph.D., associate professors at the college.
Become a Math Maven with a Degree in Mathematics
Are you a problem solver? Consider pursuing the mathematics major at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. One of the college’s newest undergraduate programs, the mathematics major will equip you with the skills for solving problems encountered by mathematicians, educators, government officials, scientists, engineers, and others. When you add it all up, the mathematics major prepares you for graduate school and/or a career in science, industry, and business.
