University School of Nova Southeastern University Celebrates its Diversity During “Cultural Unity Week”

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla.– February 24, 2014 –

In celebration of the rich cultural heritage of its students, the entire pre-K through grade 5 lower school at University School of Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will participate in a week-long exploration of culture and ethnic diversity.

During the preparatory school’s Cultural Unity Week, Feb. 24 through Feb. 28, students will learn about cultural anthropology by participating in discussions and activities aimed at helping students explore and share their family’s traditions, histories and cultural backgrounds. Parent volunteers will be visiting classrooms throughout the week to speak to students about their background and experiences.

The week will culminate with a Unity Fair on Friday, Feb. 28. During the fair, students will be able to “visit” various displays representing countries and cultures throughout the world. Each student will bring along their “passport” to have stamped as they travel to the various destinations. With the help of parent volunteers, students will go to a minimum of five different locations, taste delicious dishes, and learn about many different traditions. For example, at the Trinidad and Tobago booth, live steel drummers will get the students dancing and cheering.  In the Columbia booth, students will try tasty candy and pastry treats, while in the Japan booth they will learn phrases such as “Ni hau ma?” which means “How are you?”

In addition to the lower school’s Cultural Unity Week and Fair, the Upper School (9 -12) will pay tribute to and celebrate their cultural, ethnic and racial diversity during their International Night on February 27 at 6:30 pm in the Epstein Center for the Arts. The evening’s highlights will include music, dance and drama presentations that reflect artistic expressions from all the different corners of the globe, a parade of nations with students presenting flags from the more than 50 countries represented by University School’s student body, and a “Taste of Nations” banquet that will feature delicacies from around the world.
