More than 75 NSU undergraduate students have been inducted into the Alpha Chi national honor society for the 2013–2014 academic year. Alpha Chi recognizes the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors in each undergraduate major. To celebrate these students’ academic achievements, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences recently hosted an induction ceremony and reception at NSU.

The event opened with welcoming remarks from Alpha Chi faculty advisers Stephen Levitt, LL.M., associate professor at the college, and Robin Sherman, Ph.D., professor and associate dean of the college. Both acknowledged the crucial role family members and faculty play in supporting the students.

Current Alpha Chi officers Amelia Hartzell, Emily Lazowick, Biana Modilevsky, Natalie Negron, and Anagha Sadasivan then led the induction of new members. Each Alpha Chi inductee signed the society’s constitution. Hartzell then lit three ceremonial candles symbolizing knowledge, victory, and truth. The inductees pledged to uphold the honor society’s principles and were officially inducted as Alpha Chi members.

Susan Starkey, a Town of Davie councilmember and president of the Broward League of Cities, served as the ceremony’s guest speaker. Starkey, who has more than 30 years of experience in public service, congratulated the students on their accomplishments and discussed the important role they play as future leaders.

Following the formal ceremony, the students joined friends, family members, faculty, and members of university leadership for a celebratory reception.
