NSU’s Abraham S. Fischler School of Education will host the Board of Examiners of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for an initial on-site visit from Saturday, Oct. 22 through Wednesday, Oct. 26.

The Board of Examiners is comprised of seven members, each of whom has participated in NCATE’s extensive review training. While on campus, the examiners will participate in dozens of interviews with current students (candidates), graduated students, full-time and part-time faculty, clinical educators, administrators, staff, and P-12 stakeholders. Information from these interviews will be used to confirm the detailed reports and exhibits that have been developed by faculty, administrators, and staff and submitted to NCATE.

At the end of this visit, a preliminary report will be provided, but the final accreditation decision will not be made until the next NCATE Unit Accreditation Board (UAB) meeting in the spring of 2012.

For additional information on this review, please contact Jan Yates at yates@nova.edu.

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Anthropologist Elizabeth Kapu’uwailani Lindsey, Ph.D., will serve as the 2011 undergraduate commencement speaker on Saturday, May 14, 2011, beginning at 11:00 a.m., in the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise. The commencement ceremony will be held jointly by NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences, Abraham S. Fischler School of Education, and H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship.

An award-winning filmmaker and anthropologist, Lindsey travels to the world’s most fragile regions to document and preserve knowledge critical to navigating the complexity of our times. She is also the first female Fellow and Polynesian Explorer in the history of the National Geographic Society. Her documentary film Then There Were None chronicles the near extinction of native Hawaiians. The film has received numerous awards, including the prestigious CINE Eagle.

Raised by native Hawaiian elders, Lindsey earned a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology and Polynesian Navigation, specializing in the indigenous practice of Wayfinding, the masterful science of non-instrument navigation. She spent 10 years documenting master navigator Pius “Mau” Piailug who, until his recent death, was considered the greatest wayfinder in the world.

Together with leading institutions and organizations, including Google, UNESCO, and Oxford University, Lindsey is developing a platform of unprecedented social innovation using technology to curate, organize, and broadcast humanity’s cultural heritage.

Lindsey also works with United Nations Ambassadors on behalf of environmental refugees affected by the climate crisis. An active humanitarian and former Miss Hawai’i, she serves on international boards and has created scholarships for women and children in India and Hawai’i.

Each year, the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences organizes its academic programming around an annual theme. Lindsey will be the last of the distinguished speakers for the year to address the annual theme of “Identity.” For more information on the Distinguished Speakers Series, contact the Office of the Dean at (954) 262-8236.

Join NSU for its eighth annual study abroad in Sweden course offered through its Interdisciplinary Arts Master’s Program offered at the Fischler School of Education and Human Services.

Work side-by-side with European-trained artists and arts teachers to create an interdisciplinary arts production during this two-week summer course: International Arts & Culture Infusion (July 24 – August 7, 2011).

This learning adventure has two components: the study of a unique interdisciplinary arts education methodology, and the study of European culture through field trips and on-site experience in and around the beautiful coastal village of Oskarshamn, Sweden. Travel to and within Sweden is relatively easy. You need only a passport (no visa is necessary). Most people in Sweden speak English, and Americans are welcome guests.

This course is available to graduate students (EIA 0600) and to undergraduate students (EDUC 4900) and can be taken for 3 credits (6 credits available by special arrangement with professor). Financial aid will cover the standard tuition costs, and the room and food package is very affordable (lowest rates in Europe).

Participants need not be enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Arts Program, or be a degree-seeking student to take this course. For more information, please contact David Spangler at davids@nova.edu, 954-262-8363, or visit the website at www.schoolofed.nova.edu/iap/studyabroad.htm.
