SHSS Faculty, Students and Alums Form Conflict Prevention Early Warning and Response Working Group
A new working group comprised of faculty and students has been formed in NSU’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS). The aim of this new group, called the Conflict Prevention Early Warning and Response Working Group at NSU, is to track new developments in Early Warning and Response, act as an information hub, conduct original research on this topic, and make policy recommendations.
Whether it is a highly-emotional labor strike, an upcoming election in a small African country, a logging blockade in front of an old-growth rain forest or a troubled inner-city neighborhood, these are all situations in which preventing the outbreak of violent conflict is desirable. Conflict prevention is concerned with taking actions to reduce or prevent violence in those situations where it is likely to occur. The prevention of violent conflict is comprised of two main components: warning and response. We need a credible warning of impending violence followed with appropriate responses to prevent this violence from emerging or escalating.
