NSU’s Oceanographic Center’s O-STEM Summer Camp Featured on NBC-6 Miami
Fort Lauderdale-Davie, Fl – This summer, a group of students from South Broward High School took part in a summer camp like no other. That’s because they worked with and learned from researchers and scientists at Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center and Guy Harvey Research Institute.
The students learned about what makes up the world’s oceans – from fish to coral reefs to ocean currents. In addition, part of the Oceanographic Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (O-STEM) program was the chance to hit the high seas and assist in tagging sharks.
During the trip, four sharks were caught and released – three sandbar sharks and one nurse shark. Catching the sharks isn’t for fun – scientists are researching these incredible creatures so we can better understand and protect them for future generations.
