NSU Students Campaign On Behalf of the Conflict Minerals Fair Trade Act

Pictured from left to right: David Bright, Maria Espinola, John Prendergast, Representative to Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Courtney Cantrell, FAU student representative, and Katariina Juliao.

Students from the Center for Psychological Studies and the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, along with John Prendergast, co-founder of the “Enough Project” – an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity – visited with Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen recently to advocate on behalf of the Conflict Minerals Fair Trade Act.

The Eastern Congo’s conflict minerals, namely tin, tantalite, tungsten, and gold are used in electronic devices such as cell phones and laptops. Proceeds from the sale of these conflict minerals is a major source of funding for armed groups in eastern Congo who commit atrocities against civilians. The purpose of the conflict minerals bill is to implement greater accountability for companies who use the minerals.

As a result of the advocacy campaign, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen supported the legislation.

In the coming months, the student led group will establish brown bag lunch meetings to discuss the pros of human rights advocacy campaigns. All are encouraged to attend.
