Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Begins at NSU

 

NSU kicks off Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) by celebrating and learning about the Latin culture through a variety of activities.

COST: Unless otherwise noted, all events are FREE and OPEN to the Public.

LOCATION: Events will be held at locations throughout NSU’s main campus and at the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education campus, 1750 NE 167th Street in North Miami Beach.

Wednesday, September 18

 Working with Latino Children and Families in South Florida: Cultural and Contextual Issues, Noon – 1:00 pm

This presentation, facilitated by Diana Formoso, Ph.D., from NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies, will focus on cultural and contextual issues to consider when working with Latino children and families, including: the impact of multiple, chronic and uncontrollable stressors on family life; faith-based coping; cultural values supporting hierarchical parent-child relationships; children’s cultural brokering and family work; acculturation and parents’ ethnic socialization practices; and the legal limits of corporal punishment in Florida. Opening Celebration with Hispanic Music and Composers, 10:30 – 11:45 a.m.

The Abraham S. Fischler School of Education will kick off Hispanic Heritage Month celebration with a traditional opening flag ceremony, and will present a program depicting the music of Latin America (i.e. Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, and other Latin countries. The presentation will demonstrate how the fusion of existing American Indian rhythms and styles together with the introduction of African and Spanish music, instruments and dances influenced music and composers today. Salsa Dancing! Noon – 1:00 pm

Come join Center for Psychological Studies doctoral student, Marta Tobenas, for a lunchtime salsa dancing event! Ms. Tobenas is a trained instructor who will be teaching salsa dancing from both the female and male perspectives. Bring your dancing shoes! Location: Maltz Psychology Building, room 2057. Tango from the Streets of Buenos Aires: Hispanic Heritage Dance Concert, 2-3:30 p.m.

Experience the drama of the Tango with live music and authentic dancers including members of the Miami Tango Times Dance Company. Free and open to the public.  Cine Argentino: Homenaje A Gabriel García, 2:00 p.m.

The Alvin Sherman Library continues the Argentine Film Festival with a third film, “Homenaje A Gabriel García.” This film is pays homage to Colombian writer García Marquez. Working with Hispanic Adolescents in the ESOL Program, Noon – 1:00 pm

This presentation, facilitated by Fabiola Audibert from the Center for Psychological Studies, will provide an overview of the cultural transition of immigrant youth, acculturative stress, and coping strategies utilized among immigrant students.  Cine Argentino: El Exilio De Gardel, 2:00 p.m.

The Argentine Film Festival concludes with, “El Exilio De Gardel.” This film highlights the life of tango singer Carlos Gardel, dealing with his exile, politics and Argentine history. Singer Rodrigo Aragón is also featured. Argentine actress and journalist Adriana Bianco will introduce and provide commentary. English subtitles. Free and open to the public.  Hispanic Culture as seen through its Art and Architecture Yesterday and Today, Noon – 1:30 pm.

Focusing on the indigenous and European heritage up to an examination of the present, the presenter will demonstrate how the Hispanic fusion of art, through its architecture, continues to influence the modern world. The audience will go on a virtual tour through Spain and other Latin American countries to examine the styles of Cathedrals and Churches, private homes in colonial times, Missions, universities, and outstanding landmarks in the South Florida area. A special added feature as a follow up to this event will be a visit to the Ancient Spanish Monastery on West Dixie Highway (North Miami Beach) to view its preservation of art, antiquities, and architecture of the historically-designated Cloisters and its gardens. This visit will take place following the Architecture presentation, on a day and time to be announced at the presentation. Free and open to the public. Location: Abraham S.  Papel Picado, 3:00-4:00 p.m.

Papel picado is a Hispanic folk art in which intricate designs are cut into colorful paper. Learn about this traditional art form in this hands-on workshop. Program is designed for teens ages 13-18. Paco Moreno & Friends perform music and dances from Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world. After the performance, children will be invited to play authentic Ecuadorian musical instruments which were homemade by Mr. Moreno. Location: Alvin Sherman Library, 2nd floor, Cotilla Gallery.

Hispanic Focus, Food, and Salsa Dancing,11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Come join the Orlando Campus for a lunchtime Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration that will stimulate you from head to toe.  Sheyla Ascencios. prominent Hispanic public speaker in Central Florida will focus your intellect towards important issues that are affecting the Hispanic Community. You will be treated to delectable Hispanic food – taste of a new culture for some, and memories of the home country for others. The celebration will culminate with Salsa dancing to exciting Latin music. Free and open to the public.
