Nova Southeastern University’s Palm Beach SEC Unveils Magnificent Shark Sculpture

Left to right: David Levy, mayor of Palm Beach Gardens; George Dungee, M.B.A., director of NSU’s Palm Beach Student Educational Center; Dave Porter, chairman of Palm Beach Gardens’ Art in Public Places; George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D., NSU President and CEO; and Kent Ullberg, internationally renowned sculptor and creator of “NSU Underground Shark,” unveil the 4 foot, 6 inches tall sculpture that spans 18 feet.

Leaders from the city of Palm Beach Gardens and NSU unveiled a magnificent sculpture depicting an 18 foot Mako shark at the entrance of NSU’s Palm Beach Student Educational Center (SEC) on Tuesday, May 8.

The head of the shark, bursting out of the pavers, is 4 foot, 6 inches high and features polished bronze teeth. At the other end, is 36 inches of tail, also bursting out. This major creation was commissioned by NSU in support of Palm Beach Garden’s Art in Public Places Program.  Crafted by famed international wildlife sculptor Kent Ullberg, the sculpture depicts a leaping Mako shark – the university’s mascot.

The unveiling of “NSU Underground Shark” occurred at the Palm Beach SEC’s state-of-the art 75,000 foot facility at 5:30 p.m.

“We believe art enriches one’s character and contributes to the quality of life of the community,” said NSU’s Palm Beach Student Educational Director George Dungee.  “Not only is it important to a student’s development, but it is also important to a community’s development. We are proud to support Palm Beach Gardens and its Art in Public Places initiative with this beautiful shark sculpture created by renowned artist Kent Ullberg.”
