Medical School Acquires $3 Million to Provide Services for Underserved Communities

NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program has received approximately $3 million for the 2010-11 academic year. This includes just over $1 million from the Florida Department of Health for its operations and another $2 million from the state Department of Health for tobacco training programs.

The latter funding will allow the AHEC Program to continue to develop tobacco training programs for health professions’ students and community practitioners as well as bring tobacco cessation services to its South and Central Florida regions. AHEC’s mission is to improve the access to and the quality of primary health care service to medically underserved communities by linking the resources of academic health centers with community-based health care providers.
