Two Nova Southeastern University student-athletes picked up Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week recognitions on Monday, Feb.23, as announced by the league office.

For the second time this season, tennis player Petra Jurova (Jr., Bratislava, Slovakia) earned honors, while women’s basketball player, Jasmine Wilkins (R-Sr., Miami), was chosen for the first time this season and the third time in her career.

Jurova continues to be undefeated on the season, as is the entire Sharks’ tennis squad, through five matches. Last week, in doubles and singles, she was 3-0 in each. In one-on-one competition, against Valerie Ushanova of York, she won 6-1, 6-2; versus Florida Tech’s Chloe Chanley, it was 6-0, 6-2; and against Gianna Pinasco of Tampa, the final was 6-1, 6-0. As a team, Sharks’ singles players are 29-1 to begin the season.

In doubles, Jurova and Sabrina Kierberg (Jr., Munich, Germany), as NSU’s No. 1 duo, took wins over York (8-4), Florida Tech (8-5), and Tampa (8-4). Overall on the season, the combination is 5-0, and Sharks’ doubles teams are 12-3.

Wilkins led the Sharks to two victories over top-25 opponents and gave the team at least a share of the regular season SSC title by defeating No. 17 Rollins and No. 20 Florida Tech. The senior forward had 21 and 19 points respectively, the former coming in the Senior Night win over Rollins. In that game she shot 7-of-11 from the field and the same mark from the line, and added six rebounds and three blocked shots. Then on Saturday, in the victory over Florida Tech, she tied for the team best with 19 points and was even more efficient, making 7-of-9 shots and 5-of-7 free throws. She again had six boards in that victory.

In the last four games, Wilkins is averaging 20.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and is shooting 71.7 percent from the field. On the season, she leads the Sharks in scoring at 14.4 points and is among the nation’s leaders in field goal percentage at 63.7 percent. She is the third women’s basketball player to be recognized with this award by the conference, joining Jessica Valley (R-Jr., Lafayette, Ind.) and Kayla Wright (So., Lauderhill, Fla.).

Each team makes their way to Saint Leo for their next matchups. Tennis plays the No. 3 team in the nation this upcoming Sunday, March 1, at 11 a.m. The day prior, women’s basketball has their regular season finale against the Lions, and a win will give the team the outright SSC regular season title.
