Huizenga School Professor and Student Present Research on Business Ethics

Randi L. Sims, Ph.D., professor of management at the H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship, teamed up with undergraduate honors accounting student, Dominique Wimmer, to present their research titled “Attitudes Towards Business Ethics: A Study of Austrian Student Views” at the Academy of Business Disciplines Annual Conference on November 4. The conference was held in Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Wimmer’s presentation was awarded “Best in Session.”

The study reported survey results from a sample of 171 Austrian students. Results indicated that even though the Austrian students believe morality is important in the business environment, they think the business world operates under its own set of rules. This rationale fits with an ethical business philosophy leading towards Machiavellianism. In addition, Austrian respondents reported support for an unethical decision, which unfairly favors the individual financially at the expense of an insurance company. The results were discussed in terms of national culture.
