Hot Topics in Psychology Opens Semester with Chat on Career Counseling, Jan. 20

The Hot Topics in Psychology Series, co-sponsored by NSU’s Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences and the Center for Psychological Studies (CPS), will continue with “Career Construction Theory: A Narrative Approach to Career Counseling in the 21st Century.” The talk, presented by Kevin Glavin, Ph.D., professor at CPS, will take place on Jan. 20 from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Carl DeSantis Building, room 2060.
The world of work has changed. Unstable economies, globalization, and technological advances have ushered in a new, unpredictable world of work. The U.S. Bureau of Labor now reports that people change their jobs about once every five years. However, traditional theories of career counseling and guidance, although necessary, are not sufficient to assist clients in this new, complex, and dynamic world of work.
This talk explores how Career Construction Theory (CCT) can help individuals adapt to these changes. CCT utilizes narrative techniques to help clients attend to Adler’s work-task by helping them explore work that is meaningful to them while advancing or providing a valued service to society.
Hot Topics in Psychology is a free brown-bag lecture series that enables students to gain a first-hand perspective of research in specific areas of psychology and also serves to open up potential scholarship collaboration among NSU students and faculty members. Those attending are encouraged to bring their lunches to the talks, providing their own “food for thought.” Pizza will also be served.
