Detroit OF led all of MLB in home runs, runs batted in

NEW YORK – Former Nova Southeastern baseball player J.D. Martinez was named as the latest American League Player of the Week, as announced by Major League Baseball on Monday afternoon.

Martinez has settled into the Detroit Tigers‘ everyday lineup and has thrived as of late, batting .444 (12-of-27) over the last week, leading all Major League players with 11 runs batted in and with a 1.000 slugging percentage. His four home runs, seven extra base hits and 27 total bases all tied for the best in the MLB over the last seven days. His OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging) was a staggering 1.464 as the Tigers have won four straight and reclaimed first place in the AL Central.

For the season, Martinez has seven home runs in just 122 plate appearances (and 36 games) after notching seven homers last year for the Houston Astros, in 86 games and 310 PA. He is now batting .310 overall with 18 extra base hits, 27 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Martinez was also featured in article by the Detroit Free Press on Monday. You can view the story HERE.
