The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams performed at an elite level over the past four days, trumping their Sunshine State Conference competitors to clinch the 2012 SSC Championship titles.

“It’s very exciting to see all the hard work and dedication that both our men’s and women’s teams have put in over the last few months has paid off in a pair of conference championships.” head coach Hollie Bonewit-Cron said. “I challenged them at the very beginning of the season to be great every opportunity presented and they proved that here today.”

The men have back-to-back SSC titles in as many years as the team’s existence. This is the first time in the program’s young two-year history that the women have clinched the title. The men started with, and held the lead all weekend with 908 points, 81 points ahead of second-place Florida Southern. The women also topped the leader board for the duration of the weekend in a close finish with 932 points, only 11 points ahead of second-place Tampa. Things you should know about Mold http://nsunews.nova.edu/mold/ http://nsunews.nova.edu/mold/#comments Tue, 21 Feb 2012 16:43:53 +0000 mkiffin http://nsunews.nova.edu/?p=28678 Source: US Environmental Protection Agency

 1. Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma, and other respiratory complaints.
 2. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
 3. If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
 4. Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
 5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by: venting bathrooms, dryers, and other moisture-generating sources to the outside; using air conditioners and de-humidifiers; increasing ventilation; and using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing, and cleaning.
 6. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
 7. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
 8. Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.

Evan Haskell, Ph.D.

The third talk in the Winter 2012 Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Lecture Series will feature a presentation by Evan Haskell, Ph.D., associate professor in the college, titled “Immoral Truths: Math, Science, and the Age of Enlightenment”. It will take place on Thursday, Mar. 22, from noon to 1:00 p.m., in the Alvin Sherman Library, room 3018.

The Age of Enlightenment is a period when humans replaced their subservience to nature with the confidence to understand and ultimately control the world around them. This talk will discuss Copernicus’ observations of planetary motion and the independent development of calculus by Newton and Leibniz. Haskell will also show how these developments led to a new principle of epistemology that gave rise to the power of reason and dignity of humans, which triumphed during this age.

The Faculty Lecture Series draws from the knowledge and expertise of more than 120 full-time faculty members within the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. The series explores the faculty’s diverse areas of interest in the arts, humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, and biological sciences. These talks are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Jim Doan, Ph.D., professor in the college, at (954) 262-8207.

Office of Undergraduate Admissions Hosts Dual Admission & Honors Program Expo http://nsunews.nova.edu/office-undergraduate-admissions-hosts-high-achieving-high-school-sophomores-juniors-dual-admission-honors-program-expo/ http://nsunews.nova.edu/office-undergraduate-admissions-hosts-high-achieving-high-school-sophomores-juniors-dual-admission-honors-program-expo/#comments Tue, 21 Feb 2012 15:20:33 +0000 jm3007 http://nsunews.nova.edu/?p=28511 Prospective undergraduate students with strong academic backgrounds from across the country attended the Dual Admission and Honors Program Expo on Feb. 11.

The day kicked off with an inspiring welcome by Dean Rosenblum followed by a series of presentations held in the Carl DeSantis Building. The presentations included a panel of current NSU students and faculty involved in the Dual Admission and Honors Programs at NSU. The panelists shared their experiences, offered guidance, and answered questions from prospective students. Immediately following the presentations, admission counselors provided detailed information on all the academic programs offered at NSU, instructions on how to apply, and discussed various financial aid options offered at the university.

Tours were offered to prospective students who were interested in exploring the campus further. Guests had the option to choose between a tour of the main campus’ traditional undergraduate facilities or an in-depth look inside the Terry Building, one of NSU’s main facilities where graduate medical students practice their craft. The regular campus tour, led by undergraduate Student Ambassadors, took guests through the University Center, into the residence halls, around Gold Circle Lake, and through the Alvin Sherman Library. Students who toured the Health Professions Division were taken by shuttle to the Terry Building and met by current graduate students. The graduate students offered insight on how they study, work hand in hand with faculty, and participate in a variety of lab simulations. One group of visitors even had the opportunity to hear the heartbeat of a mannequin within a simulation lab!

For more information regarding future events hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, please visit http://www.nova.edu/admissions/visitcampus/campusevents.html.

Dean Rosenblum introduces a panel of speakers consisting of current NSU students and faculty. Students and their families hear from current graduate student on how they learn from “Harvey,” a computerized mannequin which duplicates the sounds and symptoms of most heart conditions. ]]>
