As one of the world’s preeminent photographers, Sally Mann creates artwork that challenges viewers’ values and moral attitudes. Described by Time magazine as “America’s greatest photographer,” she first came to international prominence in 1992 with Immediate Family, a series of complex and enigmatic pictures of her three children. What Remains–Mann’s …recent series on the myriad aspects of death and decay–is the subject of this eponymously titled documentary. Filmed at her Virginia farm, Mann is surrounded by her husband and now-grown children, and her willingness to reveal her artistic process allows the viewer to gain exclusive entrance to her world. Never one to compromise, she reflects on her own personal feelings about mortality as she continues to examine the boundaries of contemporary art. Spanning five years, What Remains contains unbridled access to the many stages of Mann’s work, and is a rare glimpse of an eloquent and brilliant artist.

Optometry Faculty Present Research on Autism Research http://nsunews.nova.edu/optometry-faculty-present-research-autism-research/ http://nsunews.nova.edu/optometry-faculty-present-research-autism-research/#comments Wed, 22 May 2013 21:09:32 +0000 kenma http://nsunews.nova.edu/?p=45944 Rachel A. Rachel A. "Stacey" Coulter

Rachel A. “Stacey” Coulter, O.D., M.S., and Annette Bade, O.D., Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry faculty researchers presented research results at the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR) in San Sebastián, Spain on May 4. Their presentation, Vision testing of children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): What are we missing?, summarized outcomes of a 2-year study comparing eye examination testing in children and adolescents with ASD to those of typically developing controls. Using an eye examination protocol designed to accommodate the communication and sensory challenges associated with ASD, the faculty investigators studied the effectiveness of the examination protocol and compared vision findings between patients with and without ASD. Approximately, 61 patients, including 34 with ASD, participated in the study. Coulter and Bade also attended sessions showcasing research from all over the world addressing aspects of ASD. They also attended the Stakeholder Networking luncheon to learn about current research in epidemiology and public health and to meet attendees who were individuals with ASD or their family members living with ASD.

Coulter summarized their experience stating: “Although basic science research in genetics and neurophysiology may ultimately identify the cause of Autism Spectrum Disorders, stakeholders want information now. The key areas of interest are intervention, access to health care, and services for individuals with ASD across the lifespan.” Our work in vision targets these needs, Coulter said. “We found that children and adolescents with ASD, regardless of their level of verbal communication can complete most tests in a comprehensive eye examination using our protocol. This matters because our data suggest that patients with ASD may be less likely to receive vision examinations and to be corrected for significant amounts of nearsightedness and farsightedness,” she said.

Annette Bade

At NSU, this research has been applied to clinical practice, Coulter said. “Within the NSU optometry and occupational therapy services, we are using our research results to improve vision care and sensory processing interventions for patients with ASD,” she said. Research results have also been used to train practitioners throughout the United States on how to provide care to their patients with ASD. Coulter and Bade and their colleagues plan to continue their work through future studies to investigate vision function and intervention in patients with ASD.

Held on Thursday, May 16, President George L. Hanbury II, Ph.D. and the board members had an opportunity to understand first-hand the research NSU’s Oceanographic Center is conducting regarding coral reef restoration.

Board members worked alongside NSU researchers and students transplanting threatened staghorn corals at NSU’s coral nurseries off the coast of Broward County, FL. Richard Dodge, Ph.D., dean of NSU’s Oceanographic Center, provided the board with a brief overview on the necessity of coral reef research in understanding, conserving and protecting coral reef ecosystems as well as protecting the economic vitality of the area. Coral reefs contribute $2 billion annually to Broward county economy.

NSU’s Ambassadors Board’s mission is to enlist widespread and active support for the university’s development efforts, promote NSU programs, and serve as the university’s “ambassadors” to communities and constituencies.

No.2 Nova Southeastern University Rowing Team

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Nova Southeastern University’s Rowing Team, ranked No. 2 in the country in the NCAA Division II, has been selected to compete in the 2013 NCAA Division II Rowing Championships, which will be held May 31-June 2 in Indianapolis.

The Sharks received a bid as the at-large team behind the region’s top team, No. 1 Barry. Although NSU finished behind Barry this season, their strong year built the case for them to become the South Region’s first at-large selection since 2006. The Sharks were nipping at Barry’s heals all season long, with varsity-8 splits of 1.4 seconds at the Sunshine State Conference Championship and three seconds at the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta.

The Sharks arguably sealed their fate at Dad Vails, by defeating No. 6 California-San Diego in the varsity-8. The Tritons made their case for an at-large bid earlier in the season by defeating defending NCAA National Champions No. 5 Humboldt State. However, the Sharks proved their talent by defeating the Tritons by nearly six seconds on the opening day of Dad Vails.

The Sharks also earned several other key wins on the year. The varsity-8 boat was able to defeat No. 4 Central Oklahoma on two occasions, including an early-season duals race. The Sharks also earned victories over previously ranked Florida Tech on multiple occasions.

The Sharks will be competing for the title against Barry, No. 3 Western Washington and No. 7 Mercyhurst. In addition to the four teams competing for the team title, Central Oklahoma and California San Diego will both send eight-boats to Indianapolis.

Nationals will be held at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind. from May 31 to June 2.
