LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. — The Telly Awards has named Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Dateline Health as an award winner in the 33rd Annual Telly Awards for its piece on spinal surgery options. With nearly 11,000 entries from all 50 states and numerous countries, this is truly an honor.

Fred Lippman, R.Ph., Ed.D, Chancellor of NSU’s Health Professions Division, hosts NSU's Dateline Health

Dateline Health’s winning episode featured the South Florida Spine Clinic describing spinal surgery options and pain modulation. It included footage of a physician assessing a patient, reviewing radiographs, and a demonstration of a new pain modulator that’s threaded into the spine and controlled remotely by the patient as needed.

Hosted by Fred Lippman, R.Ph., Ed.D, Chancellor of NSU’s Health Professions Division, Dateline Health is a 30-minute NSU service program dedicated to promoting the community’s overall health and well-being. It covers a wide range of contemporary health care issues through interviews with health care experts, researchers, and policymakers.

It airs on Broward Education Communication Network (BECON), and is carried by COMCAST and AT&T U-verse cable providers, Direct TV and Dish Network satellite and over air signals seven days a week throughout South Florida, reaching millions of households in the community.

“We are very excited to be receiving our second Telly Award,” Lippman said. “This prestigious accolade validates the quality of Dateline Health’s programming and the impact we are making in the South Florida health care community.”

In 2008, Dateline Health was chosen as a Telly Award winner in the 29th Annual Telly Awards for excellence in the educational video/film category.

The Telly Awards was founded in 1979 and is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions, and online commercials, video and films.  Winners represent the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world.

“The Telly Awards has a mission to honor the very best in film and video,” said Linda Day, executive director of the Telly Awards.  “Nova Southeastern University’s accomplishment illustrates their creativity, skill, and dedication to their craft and serves as a testament to great film and video production.”

For its 33rd season, The Telly Awards once again joined forces with YouTube to give the public the power to view and rate videos submitted as part of the People’s Telly Awards.  In addition to recognition from the Silver Telly Council, the judging panel that selects the Telly Awards winners and the online community helps decide the People’s Telly Awards winners.

A prestigious judging panel of over 500 accomplished industry professionals — each a past winner of a Silver Telly and a member of The Silver Telly Council — judged the competition, upholding the historical standard of excellence that Telly represents.  The Silver Council evaluated entries to recognize distinction in creative work – entries do not compete against each other – rather entries are judged against a high standard of merit.  Less than 10 percent of entries are chosen as Winners of the Silver Telly, our highest honor.  Approximately 25 percent of entries are chosen as Winners of the Bronze Telly.

Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship, will hear from several inspiring speakers during their Undergraduate Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 12.20

Terry Waite

Humanitarian Terry Waite will deliver the keynote talk at Commencement. In 1987, while negotiating the release of hostages in Beirut, Waite was himself taken hostage and held in captivity for 1,763 days, four years of which he spent in solitary confinement. Waite was able to return home harboring no resentment toward his captors. In 2005, he made headlines by returning to Lebanon for the first time since his release to visit refugee camps and research the effects of war on the young.

Waite now devotes most of his time to intercultural relations, conflict resolution, and humanitarian causes around the world. He is the president of Emmaus UK (an international charitable movement), as well as founder and president of Y Care International, and the U.K. Ambassador for the Lifeline Energy Foundation.

The candidates will also hear from Jonathan Sanz, a double major in theatre and music from New York City. Sanz was recognized this spring as the recipient of the 2011-2012 James Farquhar Award. Selected by a committee composed of faculty and staff members, the award is presented to one graduating undergraduate student, in recognition of their all-around achievement in scholarship, service, and leadership.

Jonathan Sanz

During the past four years, Sanz a student at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences has acted, directed, and worked behind the scenes in almost every capacity––lighting, scenery, stage management, and at the box office. Since his first performance in Opening Night––the inaugural production at the university’s 250-seat Performance Theatre––Sanz has been featured in every musical performed at the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences. More recently, Sanz performed a leading role in the college’s production of Tartuffe. Medical Students Without Borders http://nsunews.nova.edu/medical-students-borders/ http://nsunews.nova.edu/medical-students-borders/#comments Tue, 08 May 2012 19:55:04 +0000 kenma http://nsunews.nova.edu/?p=32189 Nova Southeastern University sends students on medical rotations in 28 countries throughout the world

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. — In Vietnam, 4th-year medical student Leigh Anne Bressler learned the quality and quantity of care patients receive depends on how much money they can afford for health care. The impoverished nation’s health care system runs largely on a cash-pay system.

In Argentina, 4th-year medical student Heidi Eleanor Hagerott gave basic medical exams to residents of rural villages where electricity and running water are considered luxuries.

Their experiences are reflective of other medical students from Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine who volunteered for an international medical outreach or rotation program in 28 countries in five continents. These rotations provide the students with academic credit as well as allowing them to discover other cultures, learn about international health care systems and the practice of medicine in other countries, many of which may be lacking in medical care and access to care is very limited. Some of their patients have never seen a doctor before.

“In my two months in Argentina, I saw the true humanistic viewpoint of medicine,” Hagerott said. “I left La Rioja in tears and will always keep Argentina close to my heart.”

Since 2008, the students have become medical ambassadors of Nova Southeastern University, participating in the delivery of primary care throughout the world. They have also introduced the practice of osteopathic medicine to many countries, where this branch of American medicine is unknown.

In the education of an osteopathic physician, specific emphasis is placed on wellness and prevention, primary care, and osteopathic principles and practice. Osteopathic physicians are educated in a holistic approach to patient care that includes environmental factors as well as osteopathic manipulation techniques. Osteopathic physicians, like M.D.’s, practice a full range of medical care. While many D.O.s practice as primary care doctors, many also practice within all medical specialties.

Osteopathic medicine, which began in the U.S., is a rapidly growing medical profession throughout the country.

“The international rotations allow our medical students and faculty to learn and share different health care delivery systems and to introduce the osteopathic profession around the world,” said James T. Howell, M.D., M.P.H., assistant dean for professional relations at NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and director of the International Medical Rotations Program. “We are very optimistic that osteopathic medicine will eventually be a major health contributor around the world.”

Hagerott and Bressler, like other NSU medical students, are given a wide range of opportunities during their international rotations. It could be a routine medical examination, participating in the treatment of infectious and chronic diseases, and the delivery of public health and preventive medical services.

“The availability and affordability of vaccinations in Vietnam has been subpar, leading to outbreaks of several preventable diseases,” Bressler said. “I saw a middle-aged Vietnamese man with a nasty case of the mumps. This was my first and hopefully last time to see such a preventable disease.”

Bressler said the man’s case reinforces the importance of vaccinations and it should make Americans feel lucky to live in a country that has far-reaching public health initiatives to protect its population.

“As a whole, my experience in Vietnam has opened my eyes to some of the health care needs of other cultures that I have yet to have as patients,” said Bressler, who also treated expatriates. “It has prepared me to be open-minded and sensitive to their needs when I will inevitably encounter many of them as a practicing physician in the melting pot of America.”

Some of the countries NSU medical students have completed their rotations include Haiti, Peru, India, Colombia, Ghana, Bulgaria, United Arab Emirates, China, The Philippines, Brazil, France, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, South Africa, Ireland, Guatemala, Kenya, Taiwan, Israel, Jordan, Costa Rica, Nepal, Germany, and Pakistan.

More than 150 medical students have participated annually in international medical trips lasting from 10 days to three months, said Anthony J. Silvagni, D.O., Pharm. D., dean of the NSU College of Osteopathic Medicine. He said the program has a positive impact on the professional growth of NSU medical students since these opportunities start with an international medical outreach elective at the end of the students’ first semester during year one, progressing to international clinical rotations during their fourth year.

“NSU students who are engaged in these international rotations return to the U.S. with a global medical mindset,” said Anthony J. DeNapoli, Ed.D., NSU executive director of international affairs. “Their experiences will undoubtedly change the way they think, view, understand, and care for a changing patient population in America.”

Ten ways to make your home healthier http://nsunews.nova.edu/ten-ways-home-healthier/ http://nsunews.nova.edu/ten-ways-home-healthier/#comments Tue, 08 May 2012 15:01:17 +0000 mkiffin http://nsunews.nova.edu/?p=32180 Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

1. Clear the air.
Take the smoke-free pledge. Choose not to smoke in your home and do not permit others to do so. Small children are especially vulnerable to the health effects of secondhand smoke. Choose to smoke outside, if you must smoke. Moving to another room or opening a window is not enough to protect your children.

2.   Air quality.
Listen to local forecasts for ozone, smog and particulate matter. When levels are high, limit your outdoor activities.

3.    Rid your house of radon.
Test the level of radon gas in your home with a radon test kit. If the test result is 4pCi/L or higher, takes steps to reduce radon.

4.    Some household products are toxic.
Use with caution! Look for alternatives to pesticides and household chemicals. If you must use them, always read the label and follow directions exactly. Always store them in high locked cabinets and in their original containers.

5.    Check for carbon monoxide.
Check that all potential sources of carbon monoxide, such as space heaters and wood stoves, are well-vented and in proper working order. Never idle the car or lawnmower in the garage, or use propane heaters in tents!

6.    Water, water everywhere.
Know the quality of your drinking water. If you have a private drinking water well, test it periodically.

7.    Get the lead out.
Avoid potential sources of lead. If your home was built before 1978, have your home tested for lead paint. When remodeling or doing home repairs, be careful that you do not create lead dust. Keep children visiting your home away from lead hazards.

8.   Keep mercury from rising.
Limit your intake of specific types of fish with high levels of mercury. Have a mercury-free home-find alternatives to mercury thermometers or mercury used for cultural or spiritual practices.

9.    Too much sun is not much fun.
Cover up, use SPF 15 or higher sun screen, and stay out of the midday sun to avoid damaging UV rays. Talk about the weather. Make a plan for temperature extremes-keep food, fluids and clothing stocked for extreme cold or heat, think of public places to go to escape the extreme temperatures, and identify who you can call for help if you need it.

10.    Wash your hands of it.
Keep the dirt outside. Remove shoes at the door. Wash your hands to keep dirt that might be contaminated with lead, and pesticides off you and your kids.
