Celebrate the Arts with FREE Events Throughout the 2011-2012 Season at Nova’s Alvin Sherman Library

FT. LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern University’s (Nova) Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center will celebrate the arts this fall with numerous FREE events that are open to the public.

Highlights include the Alvin Sherman Library’s 10th Anniversary “birthday celebration;” vibrant exhibitions featuring prominent Americans Benjamin Franklin and Emma Lazarus; the Cine Argentino Film Festival with actress Adriana Bianco; a Culture Vulture Sunday Happenings series; the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration and much more.

The below event listing is organized into the following categories: Special Events, Event Series, Gallery Exhibits, and Spanish Language & Hispanic Heritage Month Events.

Special Events:

  • 16th Semi-Annual Big Bargain Book Sale
    Thursday, Oct. 20 from 1-6 p.m.
    Friday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
    Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
    More than 40,000 pre-owned books including: textbooks, fiction and nonfiction, children’s, hardcover and paperbacks, along with CDs, DVDs and videos will be for sale at rock bottom prices.   • Alvin Sherman Library’s 10th Birthday Celebration with Fred Garbo’s Inflatable Theater
    Saturday, Dec. 10, 1 p.m. for cake cutting, 2 p.m. for Garbo show
    The Alvin Sherman Library has been open to the public and providing FREE cultural activities and enrichment for the community since Dec. 8, 2001. Join us for our 10th birthday celebration, including fun activities, entertainment and, of course, birthday cake cut by special guest and library namesake, Alvin Sherman! Then stay for a unique performance by Fred Garbo’s Inflatable Theater Company, with giant balloon-like objects that seem to take on a life of their own. Garbo is best known for his Sesame Street role as Barkley the Dog, and appearances on Broadway and The Late Show with David Letterman. All ages are welcome to this FREE celebration, but tickets are required for the Garbo show due to limited seating.   • Virtuosity and the Violin
    Sunday, Oct.  9, from 2 to 4 p.m.
    Violinist Monty Bloom will showcase his brilliant technique and sweet, powerful sound in a program encompassing music written throughout the golden age of the violin, including music by Wieniawski, Sarasate and Kreisler. FREE.
  • Road to Samarra
    Sunday, Nov. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m.
    German artist Wulf Treu will take the audience on a visual tour of his recent show. Treu mixes bright colors with dark subjects and an ironic sense of humor to surprise and engage the viewer with his unique style and perspective. FREE.
  • Russian Dreams
    Sunday, Dec. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m.
    Russian pianist Damira Feldman returns to Sunday Happenings to delight us with her vibrant, elegant and vivacious style. Her program features works by Cui, Arensky, Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky, Scriabin and Rachmaninov. FREE.
  • The Secret Life of a Baseball Writer
    Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012 from 2 to 4 p.m.
    For Clark Spencer, sportswriter at the Miami Herald, it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you survive the game! From spring training to the World Series, follow the man who has followed the Florida Marlins since 1999. FREE.
  • Emotion Expressed Through Color
    Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012 from 2 to 4 p.m.
    Unleash your inner artist! Working artist and teacher Roslyn Roth invites the audience to explore color and pattern as they relate to the culture and geography of our lives. FREE.
  • We Are The Voyagers
    Sunday, March 11, 2012 from 2 to 4 p.m.
    Join astronomer Janis Hernandez, former Associate Director of the Miami Space Transit Planetarium, in her quest to unravel the mysteries of the Universe. Get an update on the American Space Program focusing on the Cassini Mission to Saturn, the New Horizons Mission to Pluto and  The Voyagers “Outer Space” Mission launched in 1977. FREE.
  • A Child Al Confino
    Sunday, April 15, 2012 from 2 to 4 p.m.
    Author Eric Lamet will introduce his new nonfiction account of a young Jewish boy’s life in an Italian internment camp under Fascist rule. This is a book of love and hope that recounts an important, untold chapter of World War II history. FREE.
  • Point of  View
    Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 2 to 4 p.m.
    Michael Joseph will chronicle his life as a professional photographer from 1995 to the present. Using traditional 35mm film photography, his contemporary cityscape, abstract and scenic photographs exemplify creativity, wonderment and the joy of discovery. FREE.
  • “Bringing Stories to Life” with the Live at the Library! Ferro Interactive Arts Series
    Thanks to a generous gift from the Charles P. Ferro Foundation, this new 2012 season will bring an exciting array of performances designed to give children, families and art enthusiasts a fun, interactive experience in the arts.   • Live Classical Music Concert for Kids
    Saturday, Jan. 28, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

    Renowned professional musicians will perform famous pieces of classical music followed by a petting zoo of instruments! FREE.
  • Sherlock Holmes and the Opera Mystery
    Saturday, Feb. 11, from 2 to 3 p.m.

    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous book character Sherlock Holmes comes to life in the interactive play performed by professional touring theater company, Atlantic Coast Theatre for Youth. The world’s most celebrated detective is called to investigate a diamond theft at the opera house, and he must use his skills of observation and disguise, along with audience participation to solve the mystery. This program will be held in the Public Library Services area on the first floor of the Alvin Sherman Library. FREE.
  • Florida Grand Opera Young Artists
    Saturday, Feb. 18, from 2 to 3 p.m.

    Experience the joy of opera in this educational live music performance by musicians from the Florida Grand Opera. Learn how opera singers use their voices, facial expressions and movements to show emotions and tell stories. This program will be held in the Gallery on the second floor of the Alvin Sherman Library. FREE.

    Action! Adventure! Howard Pyle’s classic book series The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood comes to life in this musical puppet show performed by the Bits ‘N Pieces Marionettes. FREE.
  • Alice in Wonderland: A Cano/Hammond Puppetry World Premier!
    This visually exciting modern puppet performance of the literary classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll will dazzle audiences! FREE.
  • Hansel and Gretel: Miami Momentum Dance Company
    The classic tale by the Brothers Grimm is brought to life in this modern dance performance which features beautiful costumes and sets. FREE.
  • Gordon Gumshoe Fairytale Detective: Fantasy Factory Theatre
    Poor Granny can’t tell you her favorite fairytales because someone is stealing all her fairytale props! The future of the fairytale world is at stake and it’s up to Gordon Gumshoe to set things right! FREE.

    The Circle of Friends is a diverse group of individuals who share the common goal of furthering the intellectual resources of NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library.     In conjunction with the Broward County Public Library Foundation’s Annual Literary Feast, the Circle of Friends will be hosting an author luncheon immediately preceding the LIT LIVE! extravaganza.   • Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World
    Ongoing FREE exhibit runs from Oct. 5 – Dec. 2011 in the Alvin Sherman Library’s Second Floor Gallery. The exhibit examines the remarkable life and achievements of one of America’s most beloved personalities. Franklin was a diplomat, scientist, entrepreneur, inventor, humorist and philanthropist whose wisdom and wit continue to inspire and entertain us more than three hundred years after his birth.   • Emma Lazarus: Voice of Liberty, Voice of Conscience
    Ongoing FREE exhibit runs from Dec. 28, 2011 – Feb. 24, 2012 in the Alvin Sherman Library’s Second Floor Gallery. Emma Lazarus was a fourth-generation American from a prominent Jewish family in New York City, a poet, critic, advocate for the poor, early feminist, and champion of immigrants and refugees. This exhibit, curated by Lazarus biographer Esther Schor of Princeton University, traces Lazarus’s life, intellectual development, work, and lasting influence. Spanish Language & Hispanic Heritage Month Events:

  • Cine Argentino Film Festival
    This FREE Argentinean film series includes screenings at 2 p.m. on Sundays in September. Films will be shown in the Knight Auditorium of the Carl DeSantis Building on Nova’s main campus, at 3301 College Ave. Argentine actress and journalist Adriana Bianco will introduce and provide commentary about the films.   • Oscar on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m.
    Depicts the life of Spanish painter, Oscar Dominguez, during the Surrealistic art movement. Subtitled in English. For a mature audience, 103 minutes. FREE.
  • Elsa y Fred on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m.
    A comedy about the golden years of life. A Spanish-Argentine co-production. No subtitles, 106 minutes. FREE.
  • Roma on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.
    A look at the life of a writer: his ideas, life changes and memories. A Spanish-Argentine co-production. Subtitled in English, 155 minutes. FREE.
  • La Soledad era Esto Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m.
    A drama about divorce and its effects on a family, starring Charo López. A Spanish-Argentine co-production. No subtitles, 90 minutes. FREE.
  • Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration & Concert for Children
    Saturday, Oct. 8 from 2-3 p.m.
    Join the fun at this FREE party for families and children of all ages! Live music, crafts, storytelling, treats, and fun for the whole family, including: Paco Moreno and Friends, who will perform authentic music and dances from Spanish-speaking countries throughout the world in the library’s Second Floor Gallery.
