Gouged Girl, 2008 Oil on canvas 72 x 78 inches

Gouged Girl, 2008 Oil on canvas 72 x 78 inches

Selections from the de la Cruz Collection
Wednesday, March 25 – Monday, May 4, 2015
NSU Alvin Sherman Library
2nd Floor Cotilla Gallery

Artists in the exhibition: Kathryn Andrews, Rachel Harrison, Dana Schutz, Paulina Olowska

Selections from the de la Cruz Collection, showcase a group of women artists who are at the forefront of American painting and sculpture. Contemporary perspectives on monumentality, ownership and portraiture are explored in these works. Through a humorous filter, personal experiences are translated through art historical practices with a fresh approach.

A site-specific work by Polish artist Paulina Olowska will be installed in the lobby of the library for the duration of the exhibition. Car Mobile (MP #46), 2009, is an autobiographical work. A couple in a VW convertible find shelter under an umbrella, which appears to be shielding them from the dynamic and dangerous: taxes, former lovers, desires, doubts and the past. Car Mobile (MP #46), 2009 references the work of Alexander Calder, but it is a more narrative, more eclectic kind of mobile.

The first in a series, this exhibition at the Alvin Sherman Library Research and Information Technology Center has been curated and organized by the de la Cruz Collection to benefit the students of Nova Southeastern University.
